Neste Oil's predecessor, Neste Oy, was founded in 1948 to secure Finland's oil supplies. The company acquired its first tanker, the ST Neste - built in 1921 and previously known as the Torborg - the same year.
Neste became Finland's largest shipping company in the 1970s when it bought three 250,000 dwt VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carrier), TT Jurmo, TT Jaarli, and TT Jatuli.
MT Uikku was the first Western vessel to follow in the footsteps of the Arctic explorer, A.E. Nordenskiöld, to sail through the Northeast Passage in 1997. Two Neste Shipping tankers sailed again through the NSR (Northern Sea Route / The Northeast Passage) in 2011 and 2012.
Neste Shipping Oy became independent company in 2007, owned 100% by Neste Oil Corporation.
