Product tests

Extensive field trials have been carried out on NExBTL renewable diesel in Finland, Germany, and Canada. The fuel has performed excellently used as 100% concentration as well as in various concentrations in blends with traditional diesel. The fuel offers a good solution for reducing the CO2 emissions of trucks and buses without replacing existing vehicles.

Passenger car tests of Neste Green 100 diesel

Neste Oil has been testing Neste Green 100 diesel free of any fossil oil components and produced from 100% renewable raw materials in passenger cars in Finland. This has been the very first time in the world that a premium-quality diesel produced out of renewable raw materials is tested in passenger cars of various car manufacturers. Some private individuals and Neste Oil employees were recruited as test drivers. The fuel was distributed through selected Neste Oil service stations in the Helsinki capital area.

Bus tests in urban transport in Helsinki ─ Research project OPTIBIO

A three-year biofuel trial between 2007 and 2010 was organized in Greater Helsinki, Finland by Neste Oil in cooperation with Helsinki Region Transport (HSL), and Proventia Emission Control. The trial confirmed that NExBTL is a highly reliable fuel – Vehicles did run faultlessly also in sub-zero conditions.

Field trials in Germany

The first very positive results of a field trial in Germany were announced in June. Fourteen standard Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses in Germany ran on 100% NExBTL every day from mid-2008 onwards, recording 2 million kilometers in total by June 2010. The results confirmed that using NExBTL reduces emissions significantly compared to conventional diesel fuel refined from crude oil. The trial is scheduled to last for three years in all and will end in 2011.

In Germany, Neste Oil is also taking part in another test program on diesel fuel produced from 100% renewable raw materials. The project was launched in Coburg in 2010. A total of 15 different vehicles are involved in the field trials, all powered by a new blend of renewable diesel known as Diesel Regenerativ containing either 93% or 98% of Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel and 7% or 2% of conventional FAME-type biodiesel. The year-long project focuses on the negative impact traffic has on busy city centers and the benefits that renewable fuel can bring to the urban environment. In addition to Neste Oil, the project involves a number of German official agencies, universities, research institutions, and automotive manufacturers.

Arctic trial in Canada

Neste Oil’s NExBTL renewable diesel blend was used as one of the tested products in a biofuel trial between 2006 and 2009 in Alberta, Canada. The results of laboratory and field tests were excellent here as well, and showed that a NExBTL blend can be used at temperatures as low as -44 °C. A total of 75 vehicles of varying sizes took part in the field trials, which lasted for 10 months. The trial was sponsored by the federal and provincial governments, together with Shell Canada.
